Developed by Toyota in the late 1940s, the Kanban system originally aimed to improve manufacturing efficiency. Taking its name from the card system that tracks production in a factory, it has since been refined and customised by many different manufacturers. In project management, dependencies are defined as tasks that require the completion of a previous task before they can be actioned, i.e. they “depend” on the previous activity.
