PRINCE2 today is the de facto project management standard. The UK government in the 1980s demanded a solution to common project problems. They were struggling to deliver on time, under budget, within scope and up to quality. Like many private companies, they wanted a method focused on deliverables.
5 March 2020 Update: PRINCE2 2017 has since been renamed PRINCE2 6th Edition. The Foundation and Practitioner examinations are also now available in German, Dutch, Polish, Danish, French and Norwegian.

Many people assume that small-scale projects are easy to manage and don’t need as much diligence. However without best practices, any project can exceed its tolerances or get cancelled entirely. Learn from experience is one of PRINCE2’s 7 principles. However, when mistakes are made on projects, there is often a desire to scrub the past and start over with a new team for the next project.
